Prof. Dr. med. Markus Pfister

Otorhinolaryngologist FMH, Subspecialty : Skull Base Surgery, Otology, Neurotology

Professor Dr. med. Markus Pfister is a trained ear-, nose- and throat-specialist with the additional training of head and neck surgery. For this purpose he completed an international fellowship for Cranial Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, and Stanford University in the USA. He is an academic associate with the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, Germany, where he has been a senior physician at the Department of Neck, Nose and Ear for a number of years, as well as managing director of the Cochlear Implant Center at this University.

His research interests are in the field of genetic hearing impairment and its diagnosis. A further focus is on the causes of childhood hearing loss, their course and possible treatment options. In addition to basic research, he is involved in innovative research projects for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the head and neck region. A particular focus lies on cranial base surgery, especially in otology, neurootology and nasal sinus surgery. In this context, through a research contract he is associated with the company Fiagon, Germany, with regards to further development of navigation systems and instrument developments for operative use in the cranial base area.

A major focus of his scientific work is the restoration of the communicability of patients with head and neck disorders. This includes the establishment of rehabilitation measures, including the provision of aids. His particular interests here are the communication strategies, i.e. read-out courses and the development of supporting measures to improve the ability to communicate. In this context, he is involved as a medical director at pro audito Lucerne and actively supports courses for the inclusion of people with hearing impairment.

Since 2010 he is co-chief editor of the book "Recent Advances in Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery", Jaypee- Publishing company. He is also the author of numerous international publications (see link scientific publications) and books.
